The Ministry of Education is to roll-out a new curriculum that will award a National Diploma certificate to Senior High School (SHS) graduates, the sector minister has said.

Mattew Opoku Prempeh also said Junior High School leavers will be awarded with a High National Diploma certificate.

According to him, the National Diploma will make SHS graduates suitable for employment.

He was speaking at the 2019 Danquah Institute Leadership lecture under the theme: “World Class Education and Imperative for the Next Generation of Leaders,” Mattew Opoku Prempeh.

“The curriculum that will appear for the Junior High School will lead to a National Higher Diploma, [and] when you finish Senior High School, you get a National Diploma. It is not everybody who must go to the University straight, but we must prepare our kids for the world of work," he said.

He added: "And that National Diploma will ensure that our kids can go straight to work. If someone can go with the Middle School leaving certificate into the army, why can’t someone go now with Senior High School diploma into work? That should be good enough that anybody who has passed and has a certificate should be able to be employed provided we have prepared that person,” he said.

The minister also disclosed discussions will be held to explore the possibilities of reducing the duration of university education from four to three years.

He explained that the move was to conform with the global standard of university education.

He said: "Everywhere in the world, undergrad is three years not four years, why should we spend four years doing undergrad? We will sit down with the university lecturers and start challenging them, because Ghana is not an island."

He added: "...We have learnt [from] our history, they took two years in doing a degree in the University of Ghana. KNUST took three years because in the University of Ghana, they had a first university exam that was non-scoring and still came out with PhDs."

Currently, Ghana has three years of junior high school education, three years of senior high school education and four years of university education leading to the award of a degree certificate
