5 best new Ghana artistes of 2019

Twelve (12) months is often a very short period for anyone to make an impact, especially in a concentrated field like Ghana’s music industry.

However, for some artistes, 2019 proved to their breakout year. These are artistes who started the year as underdogs but have risen to become household names.

Despite the tough battle for relevance and airplay, these artistes have come from nowhere and made Ghanaians fall in love with their craft.

Below are the best new Ghanaian artistes who made massive impacts in the year 2019 (list in no order):

Sometimes, all it takes is one hit song to make a breakthrough in the music industry and Fameye’s rise is a perfect depiction of this narrative.

For many years, he was considered an underground artiste until he made his breakthrough with the song “Nothing I get”.

Having gotten Ghanaians to fall in love with the song, he smartly followed up with a remix, which he featured Medikal, Kuami Eugene and Article Wan.

The remix of “Nothing I get” has so far clocked 1.6 million views on YouTube, while his song, titled ‘Mati’ has also made massive waves and has over half a million views on the YouTube channel.

Fameye also performed at many shows in the year under review, including making an impressive stage appearance during the 2019 Ghana Meets Naija concert.

He was also nominated for Best New Artiste at the 2019 Ghana Actors and Entertainers Awards (GAEA), although he missed out on the gong.

Last December when Sarkodie gave Tulenkey the chance to perform at his flagship ‘Rapperholic Concert’, not many really envisaged the young rapper taking his career to another level in 2019.

However, after announcing himself on Sarkodie’s “Biibi ba” track, Tulenkey has gone on to establish himself as one of the most enterprising rappers in the country.

In February, he released his biggest song yet, titled “F*ck boys”, which remains a huge jam on the streets.

Realising how well the song was received, Tulenkey proceeded to do a Nigerian version of the song, featuring Ice Prince and Falz.

The young rapper has also been involved in a lot of collaborations this year, having finally made his breakthrough in the music industry.

It has been an eventful 2019 for reggae/dancehall artiste J.Derobie since he was discovered by Mr. Eazi through his emPawa Africa project.

The 24-year-old was one of 10 lucky artistes who were selected to be part of the project and he hasn’t looked back since.

J.Derobie released an inspiring single titled “Poverty” earlier this year. The song is currently the most popular on the emPawa YouTube channel with more than 1.3 million views.

“Poverty” has been endorsed by a host of A-list artistes, including Jamaican star Popcaan, who featured on the remix of the song.

The visuals for his latest single, titled “Odo bra”, which was released in October, has also clocked over a million views on YouTube.

Having emerged on the music scene just a few months ago, it came as a big deal when J.Derobie was selected as one of the acts to perform at the 2019 Ghana Meets Naija Concert.

Okailey Verse, known in showbiz as O.V, is currently one of the most sought-after female artistes in Ghana.

The young singer announced herself on the music scene last November, when she emerged winner of the MTN Hitmaker Season 7.

She immediately moved under the wings of Stonebwoy and even featured him on a song titled “Want Me” in February.

OV has since performed alongside Stonebwoy on many platforms and concerts, while her single with Kelvyn Boy, titled “Zaddy”, has also gained massive airplay on radio and television.

In 2018, singer Krymi announced himself on the Ghana music scene with his hit song “Dede”. The exciting nature of his voice surely endeared him to many music fans back then.

However, he has gone a step further in 2019, even emerging as winner of the Uncovered Artiste of the Year at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards UK.

The Highly Spiritual Music label signee also has a song with Darkovibes titled “Toffee” which is doing well on YouTube.

With his impeccable voice, Krymi is finally getting the recognition he deserves and it all came together in 2019.
