From heavy-bass laced hip-hop to the complicated afrobeats sounds made of Kora, Talking drum, Balafon, Shekere and Djembe, this year has produced wonders – most of which were surprises.

1. Wendy Shay

She was thought to be the replacement of the late Ebony Reigns after her signing but has lived beyond critics’ inexorable prognosis.

Wendy Shay exploded instantly when launched herself onto the scene with “Uber Driver” in June under Bullet’s RuffTown Records/MidasTouch Inc. – the same label which catered for the “Maame Hw3” hitmaker.

She followed up with another banger “Bedroom Commando”, “Astalavista” and later recruited Sarkodie and Kuami Eugene for “Psalm 35”.

However, her career was nearly rocked by a sex scandal with her manager Bullet but thanks to her PR tactics, she pulled a great collaboration with Eno Barony on “The Boy Is Mine” to clear the mess.

She concluded the year with another jam, titled “Masakra”. Her dominance as a new artiste just a recherché – the industry hardly sees this.

2. Kelvyn Boy

After grabbing the “Unsung Artiste” accolade at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, the Burniton Music Group signee has never had a rest.

Kelvyn Boy kick-started the year with an impressive afrobeats jam, titled “Afrobeats” and followed up another blistering dance vibe titled “Coffee”.

Aside from his busy club tours, an international tour with Stonebwoy and massive collaborations, he managed to maintain his relevance with his latest, titled “Ginger”.

3. eShun

Despite losing out the “Unsung Artiste” award to Kuami Eugene at the 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, eShun, one of the most outstanding and current best female songstresses, didn’t give up.

Known for her 2017 hit single, “Someone Loves Me”, which has half a million views on YouTube, eShun started the year with a reggae melody titled “Fa Me Kor”.

She followed up with “Fakye” and “I Want” and her current hit, “Akyia”.

Her hard work earned her 8 nominations at this year’s Central Music Awards – making her the only female to garner that number of nominations.

What a way to end the year!

4. Kofi Mole

“Fie biaa Mensah wom//I do some things I don't remember//My boys make ready for whatever//Make dem no this sh** be forever...(this sh** be forever)” this is one of the lyrics on the lips of every music lover – and Kofi Mole is the mastermind.

He gets the crowd yearning for more whenever he hits the stage and it’s incredible to witness him perform his biggest career song so far.

5. DopeNation

One of the biggest things to have happened to the industry this year is VO Nation label’s duo DopeNation.

It’s been a great year for the 2018 VGMA “Unsung” nominees.
