9 Unforgivable Snubs From This Year’s Oscar Nominations

2) Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) Remember Joe Pesci? The guy known for his hot-headed performances in Scorsese like Goodfellas and Casino returned to the screen this year and did exactly the opposite of those characters with Scorsese in The Irishman, and was nominated for an Oscar today for his efforts. In Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez basically did one of those O.G. Pesci performances, and totally crushed it. She's the movie's backbone, and gives a career best, magnetic performance in the process. Not to mention how she ROCKS that coat. A sad day for the J. Lo hive. Annapurna Pictures

3) Lupita Nyong'o (Us) OK. Seriously, how the hell did Lupita Nyong'o not get a nomination (and more buzz) for her unbelievable turn in Jordan Peele's Us? Just as Get Out (which won Peele an Oscar and got its star, Daniel Kaluuya a Best Actor nomination) blended social commentary and horror thrills, Us was a similarly Kubrick-ian mind-bender. Seriously, this movie is unbelievably made with such an attention to detail, and Lupita's performance is a key reason why; without spoiling too much, the choices made for her various scenes are unbelievably memorable. 4) Greta Gerwig (Little Women) While Greta Gerwig was already nominated for Best Director two years ago for Lady Bird, her version of Louisa May Alcott's classic Little Women was probably even more deserving. While it's great that her stars Florence Pugh (also amazing in 2019's Midsommar ) and the aforementioned Ronan were nominated for their efforts, Gerwig made a story that's been made over and over again feel fresh and new in 2019. And her achievement deserved to be acknowledged by the Academy, who again nominated all men for Best Director. David M. Benett - Getty Images

5) Kang-ho Song (Parasite) It's great that The Academy significantly honored Parasite, which earned nominations for Best Picture, and for Bong Joon Ho in the Directing and Screenplay categories. That being said, how can they overlook the movie's most essential performance in Kang-ho Song's Kim, the patriarch of the movie's primary family? He brings it all to his performance, making you laugh, feel tension, and even cry all within the movie's 2 hour, 12 minute run time. Performances this unglamorous are rarely honored by the Academy, but as the standout in a movie that a lot of people really seem to be coming around on, it felt like there might have been a chancebut no avail. 6) Jordan Peele (Us) Jordan Peele has directed two feature films (Get Out and Us) and both have been basically perfect. Yes, he won two years ago for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, but why was his work for Us completely ignored? The movie was an enormous smash at the box office, a pleaser for both fans and critics, and had a plethora of great performances. Was it just the fact that the movie came out in February instead of the fall? Seems exceedingly like that could've been the case. Getty Images

7) Awkwafina (The Farewell) Awkwafina is one of the biggest breakouts of the last few years, with supporting roles in major hits like Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8, but it was her lead role in A24's The Farewell that drew rave reviews and many thought was deserving an Oscar nomination. Losing a grandparent is hard, and Awkwafina's performance in a movie that dials into that part of life was the strongest film work she's done yet. A24

8) Taron Egerton (Rocketman) Taron Egerton did his own singing in Rocketman, won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, and was considered a shoe-in for a nomination... and came away empty handed. Tough. The actor was electric in his role, and really became Elton John; for someone that audiences have maybe only also seen in Kingsmen, it was quite a successful swing in the other direction. If there's any silver lining to Egerton's snub, perhaps it will serve as a warning to any number of big movie executives away from doing a big music biopic every year. Yes, Rami Malek won for Bohemian Rhapsody last year, and Timothe Chalamet as Bob Dylan sounds mighty appealing, but let's not push the issue. Please. Paramount

9) Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen (The Lion King) Just like political candidates have to campaign to earn the trust of their potential constituents, potential Academy Award nominees have to campaign to earn the trust of potential voters. Yes, it's dumbbut that's how this silly process works. Billy Eichner (along with Seth Rogen) was the best part of Jon Favreau's live-action Lion King movie, and he made a strong appeal via his animated Twitter account that unfortunately didn't work. Why not let Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen share a nomination? Joe Pesci who? Brad Pitt what? Al Pacino and Tom Hanks can have an Oscar nomination if they really want it, but I think they might even sacrifice their honor to Billy and Seth's voice work if they looked hard enough in the mirror.
