You can do it with a partner or with friends. Either way, it's guaranteed to give you that extra burst of motivation.
The problem? Usually, you need some motivation to go hard as you can, as quickly as you can.
Partner workouts—and even better, partner challenges—help you get that extra dose of motivation. That's why we were grateful when Solace and Reebok trainers Kenny Santucci and Chelsea Potter showed us a little game that helps them keep each other fit and motivated.
The game is simple: one partner does five pull-ups, and the other does as many “clusters” as they can. Once the pull-ups are done, you switch.
“It’s a 10-minute workout,” says Santucci. “Get your pull-ups done as fast as possible so your partner doesn’t get as many clusters as they can get.”
A cluster is basically a squat to an overhead press. Start with dumbbells on the floor and in a squat position. Bring the dumbbells into a front rack position, and them shoot up from your legs to an overhead press. Bring the dumbbells down again and squat down, and repeat.
Do as many of those as you can while your partner squeezes out five pull-ups, switch, and repeat. The winner is whoever’s done the most clusters.
Sounds easy, right? Well, the more pull-ups you do, the harder they become. So you better work fast.
