Woyome Promises To Refund GHc 51.2 Million Judgment Debt

Alfred Woyome, will return the GH¢ 51.2 million judgment debt paid him by the State, his lead counsel for Woyome has stated.

The lead Counsel for businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, has stated that his client will refund the GHc 51.2 million judgment debt paid him.

Lead counsel, Sarfo Boabeng told the nine-member Supreme Court panel hearing the AG’s application for the retrieval of the money his client has already resolved to make the payment at the end of 2015.

An Accra High Court presided over by Justice John Ajet-Nassam freed Mr. Woyome who was facing a charge of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding the state by false pretence.

The judge in his ruling said the state prosecution did a shoddy job and failed to provide enough evidence to back its claims.

The weak prosecution, he said, was a deliberate strategy by the government since Woyome’s conviction would be evidence that the government is ‘really corrupt’.

The Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong filed an application at the Supreme Court stating that “The judge erred in law when he stated that the prosecution had woefully failed to establish a case against the accused when he had established a prima facie case against him.

The Supreme Court described the payment as illegal and ordered Mr. Woyome to refund the money to the state.

Lawyer Sarfo Buabeng stated that Mr Woyome will pay back the money by the end of 2015. The court however said the Attorney General has the locus to retrieve the money from Mr Woyome.
