Chief of Defence Staff opens investigations into Michel Camp bomb explosions

Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has opened an investigations in the explosions at Michel Camp on Wednesday after the weapon cache caught fire.

This is to ascertain the cause of the explosions which reached hundreds of metres into the skies.

Residents said the explosions were at the Base Ammunition Depot of the Ghana Armed Forces and multiple blasts could be heard for over an hour.

The Chief of Defence Staff accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General William Ayamdo and other officials visited the camp to ascertain the cause of the damage.

He assured residents in the area that the place was safe for inhabitation.

"Major investigations is going to be conducted into this incident and that is going to be immediate and we will come out with our findings in a couple of weeks," he said.

Briefing the media, Lt General Obed Akwa stated that "The destruction is serious but we don’t expect any escalation of the situation. There is no threat to the people living in this residence."

Residents in the bordering communities upon the explosions evacuated to safer grounds but Lt General Obed Akwa appealed to residents to report any unusual artefacts that they may find in the residents.

"There is one thing that I want the public to note, that those who live along this community, that if they should come across any foreign object they should not touch it. They should not touch it. If you find any missile, anything that is foreign within your community don’t touch it. Just make a report to Michel camp and experts will go and examine it and defuse it," he added.
