Drones not a priority if leaders still travel abroad for treatment – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong said it doesn’t make sense for government to invest in drone technology when leaders still travel abroad for medical treatment.

The government is on course to sign a $12.5 million deal with Zipline for the use of drone technology to make emergency medical supplies to rural areas.

On Tuesday, the deal was approved by Parliament, paving way for the country to adopt drone technology in distributing medical supplies.

However, questions have been raised by certain quarters with regards to the significance of the deal at this point in time.

The Minority in Parliament has criticized the agreement, while the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has also called on the government to suspend the deal because it does not fit into the country’s existing healthcare policy.

Mr. Agyapong is also not enthused by the deal and has described it as a misplaced priority.

He said it doesn’t make sense for government to invest in drone technology when leaders still travel abroad for medical treatment.

In his view, there is the need to invest in more important issues confronting the health sector like the quality of drugs and facilities around the country.

“First things first; before you take the drone to deliver the drugs, check the quality of the drugs and the facilities or the hospitals. It is more important to me… Is the drone a priority? I will say no,“ the maverick MP said on Adom TV‘s Badwam show.

“Until we have sophisticated hospitals such that we don’t have to travel to America or South Africa, then you can think of drones,“ he added.
