Be mindful of what you say - Speaker tells Parliamentarians

The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho has called on Members of Parliament (MP) to desist from attacking the constitutional bodies in the country.

He said attacks on such bodies will cause citizens to lose confidence in the institutions and also undermine the democracy being enjoyed by the country.

Adjaho’s made this call in his closing remarks on Friday to end the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

The Speaker was saying this after some MP’s were accused of making derogatory statements against some government officials.

Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, on a campaign platform in the Ashanti Region, accused the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, of exchanging sex for her position.

Also, Nkwanta North MP John Oti Bless is on record to have hurled abuses at Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood on Accra-based radio station Montie FM on the same day that the Montie trio made contemptuous statements against the Supreme Court.

Addressing the Parliamentarians before the house rose, Adjaho said, Mr Adjaho said.

"If you feel provoked or have any grievance, you may use due process to seek redress in the appropriate forum," he said.

He further urged them to embark on a peaceful campaign ahead of the 2016 general elections.

"I urge members to conduct their campaigns devoid of acrimony, insults and vile attacks.”

"As members of the Parliament of Ghana which is the embodiment of all the representative parts of the nation, we have a solemn duty to keep the country peaceful and united as one people," he said.
