Hackers use customers account to pay for 142 rides

Mike Crossley a 35 year old Uber user has alleged that his Uber account was hacked. He alleged that over the course of 10 days, unknown hackers racked up his account, taking 142 rides. The hackers left Crossley with a bill of £3,000 bill which he has to pay. “Most of the time they were using the expensive luxury service to run up the bill,” he said. “They were quite random although there was an address in Westminster they went to more than once.”

In an official statement from Uber, the taxi hailing outfit denied that there was any breach on their network and promised Crossley a refund of £3,000 billed in his name. However, Crossley is just one of the many Uber users who have suffered the same fate.

Investigators say they get reports from Uber users who complain of bills being racked up as a result of rides they did not take. They say “thousands” of Uber passengers' accounts are sold in underground forums on the dark web for $1 and $5. The sellers were also guaranteeing that buyers could use the original owners’ credit card details to order themselves rides for free.
