Ghanaian hearts were once again broken after Tunisia secured a penalty shootout win over the Black Stars in the round of 16 of the tournament.

But one of the major talking points of the game came in the first half when Andre Ayew’s goal was disallowed for handball.

The Swansea City forward scored what was undoubtedly a goal of the tournament contender, but the referee ruled it out after his assistant adjudged Thomas Partey to have handled the ball in the build-up to the goal.

However, replays showed the the call was wrong as the ball hit Partey’s face instead of his hand.

Appiah described the referee’s decision as “bad”, which calling for the introduction of VAR.

"Expectations were high. We really worked hard and put in our best. Unfortunately, penalties can go either way and also Tunisia is a strong team.

"I think there should be VAR in African football. If there was VAR today the results could have changed. The goal scored would have been allowed.

"I think he Victor Gomez should go and watch the video again and judge it for himself. It was really bad," Appiah fumed.

Meanwhile, CAF has indicated that the VAR will be introduced in the ongoing AFCON from the quarter-final stage to the final.
