Former Accra Hearts of Oak player and Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah says he is struggling to understand the death of his mother, coming at a week he is celebrating his birthday.

“Today is my birthday and I should be celebrating but instead I’m mourning. Mourning the very person who gives me so much love and joy. For I always see 24th December as a day to celebrate you instead of me because you made it possible," the former Juventus midfielder said in a tribute to his late mom.

He continued: "This day was never complete without me showing you how much I love and appreciate all you have done for me. There was no birthday without the kiss on your cheeks.

“Why you chose to leave me the same week I celebrate my birthday is what I’m struggling to understand.”

Appiah's mom, Madam Comfort Afua Aidoo, died on Saturday aged 73.

And a gala competition aimed at bringing a host of international players to the Wembley Park at Kotobabi in Accra to mark his 38th birthday has been cancelled in response to his mother's death.

Stephen Appiah led Ghana to its first World Cup appearance in 2006 as well as Ghana’s best ever World Cup finish in South Africa four years later.
