The last AFCON was the first time the tournament was held in the summer, with Egypt being the hosts.
However, CAF has decided to revert the tournament back to the winter due to weather conditions in host nation Cameroon.
Weather conditions in the summer in sub Saharan Africa are traditionally rainy, while the tournament would also clash with the new FIFA club World Cup should it be held in the summer of 2021.
The Club World Cup is set to be held in China between June 17 and July 4 next year.
Meanwhile, the 2021 AFCON will now be held from January 9th to 6th February 2021.
