Vital stats after matchday 1 of the Ghana Premier League

The 2019/20 Ghana Premier League began on Sunday with a lot of thrill at nine match venues on day 1.

Matchday 1 of the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League produced 25 goals, which is an average of 2.8 goals per game.

This is the highest goals scored on matchday 1 of the Ghana Premier League since the 1993/1994 season when the GPL first kicked off.

Three teams won away from home, while five won at home, with a game-ending in a draw.

Justice Blay became the first player to score on matchday 1 when he hit the back of the net as Asante Kotoko edged Techiman Eleven Wonders 1-0 in Kumasi. His goal came on the 2nd minute.

Debutant Christopher Nettey registered the first assist of the GPL. He provided Justice Blay with the assist against Techiman Eleven Wonders.

Medeama SC talisman Agyenim Boateng emerged as the assist king on matchday one when he was involved in all the three goals registered by his side at Dwarfs.

Yahaya Mohammed registered the first hat-trick of the season when he scored three goals as Aduana Stars defeated Inter Allies 4-0 on matchday 1. He last registered a hat-trick in 2016 against Hasaacas.

The last player to score a hat-trick on matchday of the Ghana Premier League was Emmanuel Baffour of New Edubiase when they defeated Bechem United in 2011.

The first player to receive a caution on matchday 1 of the Ghana Premier League was Suraj Ibrahim. He received his first booking on the 17th minute.

He subsequently became the first player to be sent off- This happened after receiving his second yellow card on the day to see red.

Hearts of Oak 0-1 Berekum Chelsea

Hearts of Oak suffered their first league defeat at home against Berekum Chelsea. In nine previous attempts, the Berekum lads had lost six and drawn three.

They had even lost their last five visits to the capital against Accra Hearts of Oak.

The Phobians last won the Ghana Premier League in the 2008/09 season and they have failed to clinch the title afterwards.

Hearts of Oak are aiming at ending their long wait for a league title and a man of God even prophesied that the Accra giants will end their trophy drought this season.

However, no team has ever won the Ghanaian topflight league after suffering a home defeat` on matchday 1 since its inception in the 1956/1957 season.

Kotoko 1-0 Techiman Eleven Wonders

The Porcupine Warriors defeated the Techiman based side to secure their 41st league triumph over a debutant in the Ghana Premier League since 1993/1994 season.

Aduana Stars 4-0 Inter Allies

They maintained their superiority over Inter Allies at Dormaa. In their four previous clashes at Dormaa, the hosts had won 3 and drawn 1.

Ebusua Dwarfs 1-3 Medeama SC

The Tarkwa based side continued their impressive away form against the Cape Coasters and this time around they won big. In their six previous visits, they had won two, lost three and drawn 1 in the league.

Bechem United 2-0 Elmina Sharks

The Bechem lads won their first league game against Elmina Sharks. In their two past meetings in the league, Bechem United had won 1 and lost one.

Ashanti Gold 3-0 Great Olympics

The Miners extended their winning home run over the Wonder Boys as they thrashed them 3-0.

AshGold have now won their last four league games at home to Great Olympics.
