Andre Ayew says Otto Addo should have been sacked after AFCON failure
André Ayew says Otto Addo should have been dismissed after Ghana failed to qualify for AFCON 2025.
Ayew believes Ghana’s failure to reach the tournament should have triggered an earlier coaching change.
Addo later guided Ghana to the 2026 World Cup before being dismissed ahead of the tournament.
Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew believes Otto Addo should have been dismissed as Black Stars coach much earlier, particularly after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, Ayew said the decision to part ways with Addo came later than it should have.
"When it comes to Otto Addo, it was a call that should have been made long before. I think when you’re Ghana and you don’t qualify for the AFCON, you can’t go further,” he said.
Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON which was the first time in more than 20 years that the Black Stars failed to qualify for the continental tournament.
Despite the setback, Addo remained in charge and later guided Ghana to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was eventually dismissed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on March 31, 2026, just 72 days before the World Cup.
Ayew acknowledged Addo's achievement in securing World Cup qualification but questioned why the coaching change was not made after the AFCON failure.
The former Black Stars captain also criticised Ghana's results after World Cup qualification, saying the team went through a difficult spell of friendly matches.
Addo's departure was followed by the appointment of Carlos Queiroz, who took charge shortly before the World Cup. Queiroz later left the role after Ghana's campaign in the tournament, where the Black Stars reached the knockout stage before losing 1-0 to Colombia.
