Assistant coach of the Black Stars, Ibrahim Tanko has justified why the Ayew brothers were left out of Ghana’s latest squad to face Uganda, insisting the decision was taken in order to try out new players.

The Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, failed to make the cut when coach Kwesi Appiah named his initial 26-man squad to face Uganda in next week’s world cup qualifier.

Their omission became a matter of debate among Ghanaians, with people reading various meanings into the decision by the Black Stars technical team.

Ex-Ghana U-23 international and uncle of the Ayew brothers, Sola Ayew, earlier in the week described their omission as “shocking”.

However, explaining the rationale behind the dropping of the duo, Ibrahim Tanko said the decision was nothing personal.

According to him, the technical team just wanted to try out new players, relating the situation of that of Mubarak Wakaso, who has not received a call-up since Appiah was reappointed as Back Stars coach.

Speaking in an interview with Nhyira FM, the deputy Black Stars coach said: “The Ayew brothers were left behind for the Uganda match because we want to try other players as we did to Wakaso and others, but for Asamoah Gyan we are still monitoring him.”

He added that “the final squad of 23 for the trip will be announced on Friday and so let us wait”.

Ghana will face Uganda in Kampala on October 7, with a place in Russia still up for grabs, despite Egypt holding a commanding lead.
