Euro 2016 winners Portugal return home

After so many near-misses, Portugal finally holds an international trophy, and the country is determined to enjoy the moment, welcoming the victorious Euro 2016 team back to Lisbon in spectacular fashion.

Eder's extra-time strike handed Portugal a 1-0 win over France in Paris on Sunday, after the host nation had missed a host of chances to break the deadlock.

And the wild and emotional celebrations from the Portugal players and staff that greeted the final whistle continued as they arrived back in the Portuguese capital.

The team landed at Lisbon's Portela Airport and received something of a wet welcome as green and red water cannons were fired over their plane.

Fernando Santos' men then boarded open top buses and made their way into the city, where the squad was greeted by hordes of joyous fans who had packed the streets for a glimpse of the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Portugal clinched European glory despite winning just one game inside 90 minutes and did so even with Ronaldo being taken off on a stretcher with a knee injury after 25 minutes.

Prior to their victory in Saint-Denis, Portugal had reached the semi-finals of the World Cup twice and the last four of the Euros on three occasions. As host nation, Portugal reached the final in 2004, only to lose 1-0 to surprise package Greece.
