Stephens claimed a 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win over veteran Williams at Roland Garros, with the latter committing 30 unforced errors.

It was the first competitive meeting between the pair, with the 22-year-old Stephens not knowing what to expect from her opponent " a seven-time grand slam singles champion.

"I didn't really know what to expect," Stephens said.

"Obviously she's a great player, a great champion but I knew I was just going to have to get out there and do my best.

"Obviously, I've never played her in a real match, so I didn't know if she was going to blast me off the court, or how that was going to go.

"I knew if I just stayed there and played my game, that it would be a good match."

Stephens will face Brit Heather Watson in the second round.
