George Lucas Edited Star Wars to Have Greedo Say 'MACLUNKEY' Before Shooting at Han Solo
There's a famous adage among Star Wars fans that you've most likely heard before: "Han shot first." That famous phrase comes from Star Wars loyals who couldn't understand why, in a 1997 special release of Star Wars: A New Hope, George Lucas re-edited his original space opera, making it so that Greedo shot his blaster at Han Solo first, rather than Harrison Ford 's iconic figure just blowing the baddie away because he's a cold-blooded badass. Well, now, with Disney+'s release of the Star Wars movies it's been revealed that another change is made: not only does Greedo shoot, but he shouts "MACLUNKEY!"
It's a change that... frankly, makes no sense, keeping with much of the decisions that George Lucas made between 1997 and 2012, when he sold his company off to Disney; that includes, but is not limited to the creation of Jar-Jar Binks, a series of Star Wars movies being for some reason about space trade and bartering, and, of course, letting Greedo shoot first in the first place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , Lucas made the change back in 2012 just before selling his company off to Disney.
Marissa Martinelli over at Slate went the extra mile to dive into what Lucas possibly could have meant by this "MACLUNKEY" that Greedo now shouts; keep in mind, none of Greedo's dialogue is in english, so this has to be in a different tongue. As she puts it:
After scouring the Complete Wermos Guide to Huttese , I suspect its actually supposed to be ma klounkee, a phrase used in The Phantom Menace: Sebulba tells Anakin Neek me chawa, wermo, mo killee ma klounkee, which is translated in the subtitles as Next time we race, boy, it will be the end of you. By that logic, ma klounkee would mean something like Ill end you.
Writer/comedian Eric Fell may have been the first one to notice Lucas' latest change in the Disney+ version of the movie."In the Disney+ version of Star Wars Greedo now shouts "MACLUNKEY" before getting shot. This is now my favorite version because why the hell not? MACLUNKEY! # # ," he tweeted.
Comedian Patton Oswalt and horror legend Stephen King also chimed in.
Looks like the seed money that Maclunkey Toilet Pucks gave to Disney+ is really paying off. #maclunkey https://t.co/ttgwz1BZLV Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt)
#Maclunkey Just because its so weirdly funny. Stephen King (@StephenKing)
At least Lucas has a sense of humor about all of this (or, he did at one point): in 2007 he was spotted on the set of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wearing a shirt saying (what else?) "Han Shot First."
