According to Stanley Martey, Communications manager of the Ghana Water Company, the directive was supposed to have taken effect as at January, 2014. He noted that essential service providers which fails to pay their bills may not be disconnected.

“All tertiary institutions, all government institutions, municipal, metropolitan and district assemblies must start paying their water bills from their budgetary allocation.“Some of them we could disconnect but some of them that provide essential services, we may not have to disconnect but they still have to pay their bills,” he told Starr News.

In August last year, the Northern Regional Office of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) sent final demand notice to MMDAs in the region to settle their water bills before the close of the month or risk disconnection and subsequent prosecution.
