Bruno Fornaroli continued his stunning season with a record-breaking double to send Melbourne City top of the A-League with an easy 3-0 home win over Wellington Phoenix.

Fornaroli squandered a great early chance by firing straight at goalkeeper Glen Moss, but City moved in front two minutes before the break.

Attacker Harry Novillo exchanged a stunning one-two with Fornaroli – who produced a majestic chip – before firing his first-time finish into the far corner.

The home side won a penalty midway through the second half when Albert Riera was adjudged to have fouled Michael Zullo as he attempted to turn in the area.

Fornaroli saw his poor spot-kick saved by Moss, but he quickly converted the rebound.

The Uruguayan striker then made it 22 league goals from 25 games this season – the most goals ever scored in an A-League campaign - with a stunning late clincher, finding the top corner from outside the area after fine work from Nick Fitzgerald to set him up.
