Police have no right to seize your keys - MTTD boss to drivers

The warning comes following repeated complaints from the general police about the seizure of keys which in some case have led to scuffles between police officers and drivers.

The caution was given by Patrick Adusei Sarpong, the Commander of the Motor, Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

In an interview with Accra-based Onua FM, the MTTD boss described as unlawful such demands made by the traffic police.

The warning comes following repeated complaints from the general public about the seizure of keys which in some cases have led to scuffles between police officers and drivers.

Some police officers reportedly go to the extent of removing the mandatory road worthy stickers embossed on vehicles.

He explained that drivers found to be on the wrong side of the law and behaving in a non-compliance manner to instructions given by the traffic police could be processed before court even in their absence.

In court, the police would seek an arrest warrant which gives the police the right to arrest the said driver at a later time.
