Egypt and Liverpool winger, Mohamed Salah has been crowned 2017 CAF African Player of the Year in an award gala held on Thursday night in Accra, Ghana.
The Egyptian beat off competition from Liverpool teammate and Senegal talisman, Sadio Mane, and Gabonese and Dortmund goal poacher, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who won the award in 2015.
The Egyptian has been in scintillating form and has enjoyed a good year helping Egypt qualify for the 2018 World Cup and scoring 17 goals and bagging 5 assists in the current season.
The Egyptian joins an elite list of winners of the accolade which has three-time winner and former World Best, George Weah (Liberia), four-time winners Samuel Eto’o Fils (Cameroon) and Abedi Pele (Ghana), Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, and Yaya Toure of Cote D’Ivoire who won the award for a record four consecutive times.
Salah is only the second Egyptian to have claimed the award after Al Ahly forwards Mahmoud El Khatib and Mohamed Aboutrika won it in 1983 and 2008 respectively.

The Player in an acceptance speech dedicated the award to all children in Egypt and around the continent and charged them to never stop dreaming.
"I would like to dedicate it to all the kids in Africa and Egypt, I want to tell them to never stop dreaming, never stop believing."
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as the CAF President Ahmad Ahmad and President of the host country, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who won the Platinum Award.
