Spinel is a transparent, bulletproof material that can be molded into virtually any shape. The process  involves heating synthetic powdered clay and pressing it under vacuum into transparent sheets.

Head of the research team, Dr. Jas Sanghera said in a statement: "The advantage is it's so much tougher, stronger, harder than glass. It provides better protection in more hostile environments so it can withstand sand and rain erosion."

Dr. Sanghera  further added that one of the unique features of Spinel is that it weighs lesser than other bulletproof glass.

The US Navy plans to share intricacies of this state-of-the-art technology and its production process with other Military units in the Department of Defense.
