Ghana has significantly improved its ranking on the 2015 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Index. Ghana jumped from 101 position in last year's ranking to 63rd out of the 145 countries.

The report ranks the ability of 145 countries to narrow the gender gap in four fundamental areas i.e  economic participation and opportunity, education attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

Rwanda is the only African country to be ranked in the top 10.

Ghana ranked 13th under Economic participation and opportunity.  In the area of Educational Attainment Ghana ranked 119th. Health and survival 87th and 96th for Political empowerment.

The Global Gender Gap Index was introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006 as a framework for accessing  the magnitude of gender-based discrepancies and tracking their progress.  This year is the 9th edition of the Index.

Iceland was ranked first for the seventh conservative year. They are trailed by Norway in second place.

The rankings are designed to create greater awareness among a global audience of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the opportunities created by reducing them. The methodology and quantitative analysis behind the rankings are intended to serve as a basis for designing effective measures for reducing gender gaps.
