Michael Essien joins prison inmates to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence day

Indonesia celebrated their 72nd Independence Day anniversary on Thursday, August 17, 2017.

Essien has been playing in the Indonesian topflight since the beginning of the 2017 after joining Persib Bandung on a free transfer.

The former Chelsea star has already been involved in a series of events since moving to the Asian country, including engaging the locals in numerous programmes.

The Ghanaian was at it again on Thursday, as he marked the country’s 72nd Independence day anniversary by visiting inmates of the Lapas Sukamiskin prison.

The 34-year-old joined the inmates as they played a local game called “panjat pinang”, while also posing for pictures with the entire group.

Essien later took to Instagram to congratulate the people of Indonesia on their 72nd birthday, insisting he had a “great time” with the inmates.

The former AC Milan anchorman wrote: “I had a great time visiting LAPAS SUKAMISKIN today. I wish to extend my wholehearted congratulations to the people of Indonesia on their independence day...This picture taken a moment after panjat pinang it was a very interesting game i did enjoyed watching it for the first.”

Essien moved to play in the Indonesian league after parting ways with Greek giants Panathinaikos.
