Top 10 Ghanaian songs of 2019

2019 has been a year of many hit songs, with artistes from all the popular genres putting out great tunes.

From gospel to hip-life to highlife to hip-hop and reggae/dancehall, there were hits all over the place.

This ensured that music fans always had more than one favourite song on their playlists and that can only be good for the music industry.

Pulse Ghana has compiled a list of the top 10 Ghanaian songs of the year 2019 (in no order):

Shatta Wale has earned the reputation as an artiste who usually produces many hits during the year.

For 2019, though, none of his songs came close to ‘Melissa’. The slow-tempo jam commanded the charts and trended for many weeks after its release.

It became one of the most played songs on radio and television, with its video also clocking over 2.2 million views on YouTube.

“Nobody” was released off the EP “Live from Nkrumah krom, Vol II: Home run”. Featuring Mr Eazi, the song became one of the biggest bangers in 2019.

The song was produced by MOG beatz, and currently has over two million views on the Ground Up Chale YouTube channel.

Kwesi Arthur burst onto the scene just over a year ago but, in 2019, “Nobody” was definitely his biggest song and its far-reaching impact resonates with every Ghanaian music fan.

Medikal undoubtedly enjoyed a stellar year in 2019, having finally won the Rapper of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

The highlight of the rapper’s year, though, was the release of “Omo ada” remix, featuring Shatta Wale and Fella Makafui.

The song, which was produced by Unkle Beatz, remains one of the biggest jams in 2019 and is played at almost every party.

On YouTube, it has almost three million views as the song continues to dominate the airwaves.

The teaser for Stonebwoy’s collaboration with Beenie Man got many fans hugely anticipating the release of the song.

When “Shuga” finally dropped in the middle of the year, it became an instant hit. Not only does it possess all the qualities to rock a party, it is a song that endears to audiences of all tastes.

The afro-pop banger, produced by Streetbeatz, readily sparks a dancing mood and currently has almost three million views on YouTube.

Celestine Donkor’s “Agbebolo” is undoubtedly one of the biggest songs in 2019, never mind that it’s a gospel song.

The inspirational song features young rising gospel star Nhyiraba Gideon of Adom TV’s Nsoroma fame.

“Agbebolo” is the perfect worship song to start your morning. It’s, therefore, not surprising that the song took over as the introductory song of many radio morning shows.

Fameye is not an underground artiste anymore but it’s fair to say his hustle finally paid dividends in the year 2019.

His big breakout started with the release of the song “Nothing I get”. The single was immediately loved by Ghanaians after its release.

This sort of good reception forced Fameye to do a remix featuring Kuami Eugene, Article Wan and Medikal. “Nothing I get”, which was produced by B2, remains one of the top songs of 2019, having received massive airplay.

Sarkodie left it late in 2019 but finally came to the party in the last four months with back-to-back hit songs.

He released “I do”, “Lucky” and “Saara” in succession but the latter is undoubtedly the biggest jam among the rest.

The rapper has an admirable telepathy with singer Efya and they both brought their A-game to give fans a lovely love song. “Saara” was produced by MOG Beatz.

Another song produced by MOG Beatz, “Ohemaa” saw Lynx Entertainment signees Kuami Eugene and KiDi finally do a collaboration.

The song is different from what we usually see from Kuami Eugene but it’s a captivating piece of work which endears to many Ghanaians.

The visual for the song has over two million views on YouTube alone and is your best jam for a quiet time.

It has been an eventful 2019 for reggae/dancehall artiste J.Derobie since he was discovered by Mr. Eazi through his emPawa Africa project.

The 24-year-old was one of 10 lucky artistes who were selected to be part of the project and he hasn’t looked back since.

J.Derobie released an inspiring single titled “Poverty” earlier this year. The song is currently the most popular on the emPawa YouTube channel with more than 1.3 million views.

“Poverty” has even been endorsed by a host of A-list artistes, including Jamaican star Popcaan, who featured on the remix of the song.

Fantastically eloquent and vocally impeccable, King Promise has stepped up to become one of the best singers in the industry.

In terms of hit songs, too, he has definitely up his game and “Bra” – a song which features the legendary Kojo Antwi – remains his biggest hit in 2019.

Produced by Guiltybeatz, “Bra” is a slow-tempo highlife jam which preaches love. The video of the song currently has over 1.6 million views on YouTube.
