Transport fares to go up soon

National Chairman of GPRTU, Mr. Kwame Kumah said the transport operators can only review prices after the appointment of a new Transport Minister.

The price of petrol and diesel went up between 8 and 11 percent for the first pricing window in January this year.

Commercial drivers have since been calling on the transport operators to review prices of fares following the increment at the beginning of this year.

But the National Chairman of GPRTU, Mr. Kwame Kumah said the transport operators can only review prices after the appointment of a new Transport Minister.

“The transport operators cannot take any decision without consulting the Ministry of Transport and the transition of the new government must settle for negotiation to be concluded,” he said.

He further called on commercial drivers to exercise restraint as the fares will definitely be reviewed after all necessary procedures have been met.

Meanwhile, Kweku Ofori  Asiamah has been named as the Transport Minister-designate.

Parliament’s Appointments Committee is expected to begin sitting from Friday, January 20 to vet nominees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for ministers.

The Seventh Parliament adjourned on Wednesday to pave way for the vetting exercise.
