Philippine authorities has said there is no Zika outbreak in the country in spite of confirmation that an American woman tested positive for the virus after visiting the northern region.
The Philippines Department of Health told newsmen on Monday that the woman, who travelled and stayed in Luzon, tested positive for Zika upon returning to the U.S.
Presidential spokesman Herminio Coloma noted that it was the first reported case of Zika in the Philippines since 2012, when a 15-year-old boy in the central province of Cebu tested positive.
Coloma, however, urged the public to stay alert, informed and calm amid the development. Zika virus, which is believed to cause brain damage in infants, is transmitted by mosquitoes that also cause dengue fever.
