The 40-year-old former Chelsea striker had been playing for Phoenix Rising over the last 18 months.

Earlier this month, the Ivorian took Phoenix Rising, which he is co-owner of, to the United Soccer League Cup final against Louisville City, but he suffered a bittersweet 1-0 defeat.

"After 20 years, I have decided to put an end to my playing career," he told BBC World Service's Sportshour (via BBC Sport).

"It's the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop.

"To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game."

Drogba completed a move from Marseille to Chelsea in 2004 and spent eight years with the club in his first stint, making over 200 appearance and scoring 100 times.

He would only add to his status as a Chelsea legend when he returned to Stamford Bridge in the 2014-15 season.

Speaking to BBC's Football Focus, Drogba spoke highly about his relationship with former Blues manager José Mourinho.

"When someone gives you the chance to buy one of the best players in the world and he says 'no, this is the guy I want' it makes you feel special," he said. "I always tried to give it back to him.

"He changed my life, he changed the story of my family. He told me if you want to be the best, you have to come and play with one of the best teams in the world and one of the best managers in the world... no, the best manager in the world.

"Everyone was saying £24m was a lot of money. People doubted. When I left I think the way everyone reacted, I think I covered the investment."

Thanks for all of the memories, Drogba. You legend!
