Stephen Appiah has cancelled a gala competition aimed at bringing a host of international players to the Wembley Park, Kotobabi, after the death of his mother.

Stephen Appiah, born on 24th December, 1980 marks his 38th birthday on the eve of Christmas, just two days after the death of his beloved mother Madam Comfort Afua Aidoo who passed away aged 73.

Stephen Appiah who grew up in poverty-stricken suburb of Accra chorkor owes much of his success as a footballer to his mother.

Appiah was supported and encouraged during his days at Accra Hearts of Oak on the local scene through to Juventus in the Italian Serie A.

Madam Aidoo was proud of the first Black Stars skipper to qualify Ghana for the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

Stephen Appiah in a glowing tribute to his mother indicated that he always celebrates his mother on his birthday and he is gutted to mark his 38th birthday just two days after her death.

“Today is my birthday and I should be celebrating but instead I’m mourning. Mourning the very person who gives me so much love and joy. For I always see 24th December as a day to celebrate you instead of me because you made it possible.

“This day was never complete without me showing you how much I love and appreciate all you have done for me. There was no birthday without the kiss on your cheeks.

“Why you chose to leave me the same week I celebrate my birthday is what I’m struggling to understand,” the heartbroken football great said in a post on his Instagram.
