On Saturday, two cheques bearing Mahama’s name and issued to two NDC national executive aspirants, Joshua Akamba and Sammy Gyamfi, went viral on social media.

The total amount on the cheques was GHc 400,000 – 250,000 for Joshua Akamba and GHc150,000 for Sammy Gyamfi.

However, the Managing Director of UMB, John Awuah, has denied reports that Mahama actually issued those cheques.

According to him, the said cheques were photoshopped by persons with ulterior motives.

“I can confirm that the cheques are fake,” he said, explaining that “the branch code 007 is our Bibiani branch whereas name on cheques reads Oxford Street branch”.

Mr. Awuah said the bank has already lodged a complaint with the BNI to ensure that those behind the fake cheques are apprehended.

“…ex-president Mahama is not a customer of UMB and hence cannot own a UMB chequebook,” he added in a Facebook post, as quoted by TV3 Ghana.
