The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) will continue the second phase of emergency work on a damaged transmission tower at Ashaiman on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after the first phase of the replacement, was completed as planned.

“We wish to inform ECG that the tower replacement works were not fully completed on Sunday, August 16, 2026, as planned,”GRIDCo said in a notice on August 21.

The company said additional work is needed to safely complete the replacement of tower T.09(01/02) on the Volta-Achimota 161kV transmission line.

“Additional work is required to complete the work to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the transmission line,” GRIDCo said.

GRIDCo said the second phase will require an outage on the V19H and V24H lines from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The company has asked ECG to make the necessary load-management arrangements to allow the engineers to complete the work safely.

The affected tower was damaged on July 10, 2026, after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out beneath the transmission lines at Ashaiman Middle East.

GRIDCo began emergency restoration work after the incident because failure of the weakened structure could have affected neighbouring towers and the wider transmission network.

On August 16, engineers carried out the first phase of the emergency work and restored power to affected customers after the exercise.

At the time, the company said the final phase, involving replacement of the damaged tower, would follow on August 23. The notice confirms that the August 16 work did not fully complete the replacement, making Sunday's additional work necessary.
