‘Japanese embassy nearly denied me visa due to my skin colour, hair, nose’ - Stacy Amewoyi
According to Stacy, she almost had her visa application rejected due to the colour of her skin, long hair and nose – which she says her interviewer initially thought she wasn’t a Ghanaian.
She disclosed this in one of her newly launched books, titled ‘The King’s Choice.' She recently launched 11 books – the first time a female Ghanaian author had ever done this.
While discussing her adventures in Japan, Stacy Amewoyi, who is a former dancer, disclosed that she was lucky enough to get a connection to work in the East Asian country.
“The officials at the Japanese embassy were suspicious of me because, according to them, I did not look like a Ghanaian,” narrated Stacy in ‘Adventures in Japan,’ Chapter 7 of her book, ‘The King’s Choice.’
“My skin colour, the long length of my hair, and my narrow nose were the culprits.”
She said, to convince them, she had to speak five different local dialects and interpret the meaning of her name. She succeeded after doing passing the test.
“I had to speak in five different Ghanaian dialects and had to interpret the meaning of my name to convince them that I was genuinely Ghanaian before they finally approved me.”
“What sealed the deal was when I interpreted my surname at their request. God, who foresees everything, saw it fit to give me a last name which means ‘everyone is going.’”
“Somehow, that touched my interviewer, and he stamped my visa! Over a thousand people applied for a visa, but they were all denied except for three of us.”
Stacy disclosed that tears of joy streamed down her face as she beamed at the world when she had her visa approval.
