The incident is reported to have happened at around 7pm on Sunday, January 6, 2018.

According to reports, the substance suspected to be weed was concealed in a creamy mosquito repellent container.

However, the officers at the prison gate decided to look at the content after the weight of the cream aroused suspicion.

Upon opening, it was found that a concealed contraband product had been hidden under the container.

Explaining the incident, the Public Relations Officer for the Ankaful Prisons, DSP Daniel Matchator, said the suspect claims he bought the cream without knowing the content was narcotic.

DSP Matchator said the suspect has since been handed over to the Elmina Police for further investigation.

He disclosed that a similar incident happened last year, which led to the dismissals of the prison officers involved.

“Last year some officers were dismissed from the service over similar offenders while another was jailed 13-years for attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison and the service will not protect such persons when arrested and so they should put an end to such negative acts. We must be professional in helping to reform inmates and not make their lives worst than when they came here,” DSP Matchator told Accra-based Starr FM.

He said such actions by prisons officers will not be condoned since the service is committed to reforming inmates.
