Joe Schreibvogel (later "Maldonado," later "Maldonado-Passage," but, ultimately: "Joe Exotic") was sentenced to 22-years in prison earlier this January. Maldonado-Passage was found guilty in April 2018 for paying someone $3,000 to travel to Florida and kill animal rights activist Carole Baskin.

It was a hit Maldonado-Passage had intended for years. Baskin, who owns a Florida tiger sanctuary, had been an outspoken critic of Maldonado-Passage (from now on, we'll just go ahead and call him "Exotic"). Exotic owned and operated a (here it comes) exotic animal park in Oklahoma where he kept and bred lions and tigers, among other animals.

Exotic was also found guilty of wildlife violations by the federal jury. He had killed five tigers in October 2017, falsified paperwork, and illegally sold tiger cubs.

But as First Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester put it, "the self-described Tiger King was not above the law."

Who is Joe Exotic?

Exotic grew up in rural Kansas where he developed a penchant for aiding animals. His relationship with his siblings, however, was tempestuous, and Exotic was outed by one of his brothers at an early age .

Exotic later became a small-town police chief in Texas . In 1985, he attempted suicide by crashing his cruiser.

In 1997, Exotic purchased 16 acres of land with his first husband, turning it into an "Exotic Animal Memorial" park. Back then, the animals only included a deer, a buffalo, and a mountain lion. Inhabitants soon included monkeys and, in 2000, tigers.

Exotic began touring with a traveling petting zoo, his mainstay in Oklahoma now containing thousands of creatures. But Exotic was also turning from zookeeper into illegal trader, reportedly selling cross-bred cubs. There were also instances of mishandling, with PETA capturing staff kicking animals on video footage. Some also reported seeing Joe run over an emu in order to sell its bones.

Baskin then took notice, criticizing Exoticwho then took to threatening her online. Exotic then hired a man to kill Baskin. Except the hired man was an undercover FBI agent. Exotic was arrested in 2018 and later found guilty for two counts of murder-for-hire, eight counts of violating the Lacey Act and falsifying paperwork, and nine counts of violating the Endangered Species Act.

Where is Joe Exotic now?

Exotic, now 57, is currently serving out his 22-year sentence at a federal prison.
