Asamoah Gyan wishes for second chance to retake 2010 World Cup penalty

The Black Stars captain hopes for a second chance to redeem himself from that costly miss in 2010.

The 32-year-old was responsible for squandering a last-gasp penalty against Uruguay in the quarter-final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

With the scoreline leveled at 1-1 following strikes from Sulley Muntari and Diego Forlan in regulation time, Ghana won a penalty in the last-minute of extra-time after Luis Suarez used his hand to stop a goal-bound effort by Dominic Adiyiah.

However, Gyan failed to convert from the spot-kick, sending his effort over the cross bar. The Black Stars’ hopes of making it to the semi-final of the World Cup were then dashed after losing 4-2 on penalties to the South Americans.

Now captain of the Black Stars, Gyan maintains that he is still haunted by that miss, insisting he wishes for a second chance to redeem himself from the costly error.

Speaking as a guest on at the 8th edition of LEAD Series, hosted by Jay Foley, the Kayserispor striker said: “Things happen in the game and you face a lot of the ups and downs, but it’s something that you cannot change.

"I always try to be a better man. Sometimes when I am alone in the room I just think about all these things [like missing that penalty]. I wish I could rewind [the time to retake that penalty] but you know it has already happened.

“Life goes on. As I always say, it’s going to live with me for the rest of my life till a similar thing happens and I redeem myself, which I don’t for now [if that will happen]. But if it doesn’t happen then it’s going to live with me for the rest of my life, but life goes on.”

Gyan has played in three World Cups with Ghana and is Africa’s all-time leading scorer at the global showpiece with six goals.
