The Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has sadly passed away at the age of 41.

According to close sources, the first-time MP died on Monday, 7 July 2025, following a brief illness.

His sudden passing has come as a shock to colleagues and constituents alike, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum and the wider Ghanaian public.

2. Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo Takes Ghana to ECOWAS Court over Alleged Human Rights Violations

Suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, has filed a case against the Republic of Ghana at the ECOWAS Court of Justice, alleging breaches of her human rights.

The development was confirmed by Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, 8 July 2025.

According to him, the case filed on Thursday, 4 July, accuses the Government of Ghana of violating her rights in the ongoing process to remove her from office.

He noted:

In the case, which was filed on 4 July, Her Ladyship repeated the same allegations of human rights violations which are currently pending before our Supreme Court and High Court regarding the ongoing removal processes.

An Accra High Court has thrown out an application filed by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, seeking to halt the scheduled rerun of elections in 19 polling stations.

Filed on Monday, 7 July 2025, the suit challenged the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision, describing it as "arbitrary and unreasonable" and a violation of her constitutional rights.

However, during proceedings on Wednesday, 9 July, Justice Ali Baba Abature dismissed the request for an interim injunction. He ruled that the application lacked merit, stating that the balance of convenience favoured the EC’s constitutional duty to ensure representation for the people of Ablekuma North.

The directive, rolled out under the U.S. visa reciprocity policy, affects non-immigrant visa holders, especially those applying for business, tourism, and student travel.

According to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, most applicants will now only be eligible for single-entry visas valid for three months.

5. Chaos in Ablekuma North: Hawa Koomson Attacked by Thugs During Polls

Former MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was assaulted by unidentified thugs amidst chaos during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The incident reportedly took place at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station. Eyewitnesses claim the attackers arrived in a pickup vehicle, stormed the polling centre, and overpowered the police officers on duty.

The thugs are said to have assaulted several people present, including Hawa Koomson. A viral video shows her being pushed to the ground and violently kicked in the groin and chest.
