The three South African ex-Police officers were arrested in Ghana for training the security detail of the Flagbearer and running mate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in a statement signed by its director on Tuesday explained that they deported the three because they concealed the true reasons for their visit.

“They were training 15 Ghanaians out of Accra in security drills, which contradicts the express purpose for their coming to Ghana, which was to attend meetings,” a portion of the statement read.

“Additionally, it is the view of the GIS that the training exercise conducted by the three at the El Capitano Hotel in the Central Region to a group that did not invite them, is clearly a confirmation of the attempt to conceal the motive for their visit and was therefore a breach of Section 52(1) (e) and (i) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573). Their act is also a breach of the conditions precedent for the issuance of visas as contained in the instructions on Form B (Reg.3 (4) of the Immigration Regulation 2001 (LI 1691),” the statement added.

But speaking on Eyewitness news, Atta Akyea said the arrest and subsequent repatriation is to feed the National Democratic Congress' propaganda that the New Patriotic Party is doing something inappropraite.

“It is rather shameful that we are telling the whole world that we don’t have confidence in what we started and the whole scene was just propaganda… The press statement never condemned the impunity of the BNI and their defiance of the orders of the court, as if to say that, ‘we are backing this lawlessness.’ And that’s an unfortunate situation coming from a man I respect so much,” he indicated.
