Ghana tightens border security over Burkina Faso attack

Mark Woyongo said the incident in Burkina Faso 'came as a shock and it means we are all vulnerable'

Minister of Interior, Mark Woyongo

The Minister of Interior, Mark Woyongo has noted government's preparedness to tighten security on the borders following terror attacks on its neighbour, Burkina Faso.

According to him, it is to put security agencies on high alert for cases of any attack.

At least over 28 people are reported to have been killed and dozens more taken hostage after Islamist gunmen stormed a hotel in the Burkina Faso capital on Friday on a hotel and cafe popular with foreigners.

Thirty-three hostages were evacuated from the Splendid Hotel after security forces in the early hours of Saturday began an assault to reclaim the 147-room building, part of which was on fire.

Speaking on the attacks in an interview with Accra-based Kasapa FM, Mark Woyongo said the incident "came as a shock and it means we are all vulnerable".

He noted that the controversies on the security implications should not be a bother to Ghanaians.

He said "It doesn’t lower the risk assessment. What it simply means is that we should now focus on strengthening security. Those people fortunately we know them….What we should be afraid of is the terrorists who are probably lurking in our borders trying to come into our country, or those who may even be in our country."
