The Ministry of Gender and Social Protection has started the registration of children who are on the school feeding programme unto the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The sector minister Nana Oye Lithur mentioned this at the launch of the National Social Protection Policy on Monday. She said about 10000 children were registered last week.
This is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The ministry is using data from the School Feeding Programme in order to capture as many children as possible.

She said about 10000 children were registered last week. Oye Lithur had earlier in the year promised that the ministry will by the end of 2016 register 170000 children onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.
She explained that partnerships of this nature with stakeholders have helped in the development of social intervention programs by the government.
She also said the Ministry also believes in access to health care as a basic human right for vulnerable groups.
In 2015 the Ministry in collaboration with the NHIA registered over twelve thousand people who are above 65 on the NHIS and the seven thousand prison inmates and cured lepers.
The minister explained that the registration this time around covers basic school children who benefit from the school feeding program.
This she said is being done collaboration with Ministry of Education. The minister said all these efforts will go a long way to improve the standard of living for beneficiaries.
