A driver has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast in the Central Region for stealing a handbag.

Timothy Sam, 23, was convicted after stealing the handbag of a nurse in Cape Coast in 2017.

The handbag contained valuables including a purse, GH¢400.00, among other personal items.

According to the GNA that first reported the story, the convict pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and stealing but was found guilty by the court presided over by Mr Seshee Ametewee.

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecution, led by State Attorney Vincent Nyinaku, said Madam Anastasia Baidoo, the victim works at Mercy Government Hospital in Mankessim near Cape Coast.

The court heard that on Thursday, August 31, 2017, Baidoo was from the Regional Health Directorate Area heading towards Our Lady of Apostle (OLA) College of Education when her handbag was snatch from her by Sam and his accomplice who were on a motorbike.

The prosecution said Baidoo was pursued by some staff at the Regional Health Directorate and other passers-by when he scaled the wall of the Directorate and eventually arrested him.

While he was being sent to the police station, he freed himself and run into the sea but some divers followed him up re-arrested and handed him over to the police, according to the GNA.
