I resigned for peace to prevail - William Quaitoo

Quaitoo described farmers from the North, who were demanding compensation for their crops destroyed by the army worm epidemic as people who cannot be trusted.

In a text, he sent to his friends he said he resigned to save President Nana Akufo-Addo and the governing NPP from further trolls by the general public.

“Thank you all for your kind words. In addition to the sincere apology, I resigned to bring peace among all those who were offended and to save the President and the entire party from further rancour and disaffection. The party is bigger than any individual member. I pray for a better future for all of us. Good night.”

On Tuesday (August 29, 2017) night, President Akufo-Addo received the deputy minister’s resignation letter.

This was after public backlash calling on the minister to resign or be dismissed over some tribal comments he made in a radio interview.

“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, this evening accepted the resignation from the office of the Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Hon. William Quaitoo, MP, which takes immediate effect. The President wished him the very best in his future endeavours,” a statement from the Presidency read.

Quaitoo in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM described farmers from the North, who were demanding compensation for their crops destroyed by the army worm epidemic as people who cannot be trusted.

He subsequently apologised for such derogatory comments. However, many people called for him to be dismissed.
