The Chiefs and elders of Awutu Bontrase in the Central Region have said that girls who wear provocative dresses during the 2017 Bontrase Awubia festival will be given 25 lashes.
In an interview with Accra-based Atinka FM, spokesperson for the Bontrase festival planning Committee, Nana Kwame Larbi said they took this decision in order to prevent the young ladies in the community from dressing improperly.

He added that most ladies wear short dresses to festivals. This he said may cause the girls to be abused by other men.
He explained that because of the attires some young girls wear they have been sexually abused and this has led to unwanted pregnancies in the area.
“This drastic measure will also halt the rampant increase in teenage pregnancies and other social vices,” he said.
He said the festival was a cultural activity where they hope to socialise and also uphold their traditions which include an appropriate dressing for the ladies.
The 2017 Bontrase Awubia festival, begins on Monday (September 11, 2017).
It is celebrated by the people of Awutu, in the Central Region in memory of their dead.
