UEW: Sacked lecturers to be reinstated after massive protests

Lecturers of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) who were earlier dismissed are set to be reinstated.

UEW: Sacked lecturers to be reinstated after massive protests

According to a report by TV3 Ghana, the staff, including local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Dr Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, will return to post.

Tensions have been mounting at the University after about 30 staff were sacked, suspended and demoted by the Governing Council.

The lecturers were sanctioned after they reportedly challenged the removal of former VC Prof Mawutor Avoke.

A letter from the Vice Chancellor of the University, Reverend Father Prof Anthony Afful-Broni, to the dismissed lecturers said they took a legal action, which is contrary to the University’s regulations.

“You used institutional time to go to court without seeking official permission,” sections of the letter read.

However, this led to massive protests on campus by students who felt the dismissal of the lecturers was unjustified.

Latest reports, though, indicate that all the dismissed lecturers will be reinstated in an effort to restore academic life.
