The National Democratic Congress has denied hiring mercenaries to assassinate the founder and leader of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah.

Owusu Bempah had alleged Friday on Asempa FM that the NDC hired mercenaries from Salaga in the Northern Region to kill him but they failed in their attempt.

“NDC sent someone from Salaga to assassinate me so I knew those who came to my church even though they were speaking Hausa were not Muslims,” he said on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen.

However, in a statement Saturday, the NDC "unreservedly" refuted Owusu Benmpah's allegations.

"We wish to state emphatically that the NDC had no hand in the vandalism of his church premises. Neither has the NDC engaged any assassins. These are fertile but unholy imaginations of Rev. Owusu-Bempah.

"Accordingly, the NDC requests the general public to disregard the farcical and unfounded slander against our party and its membership. Our attention is focused on defending the dignity and decency of Ghana’s democracy in these trying economic times," the statement signed by the party's Deputy General Secretary, Peter Boamah Otokunor, stated.

Owusu Bempah made the allegation after some Muslim youth attacked his church over his death prophecy about the Chief Imam.

Wielding clubs and machetes, they attacked a security guard at the entrance to the Glorious Word and Power Ministry church then began hurling stones at its windows and smashing up the musical instruments and furniture inside.

The Chief Imam has strongly condemned the attack on Owusu Bempah's church, calling for calm and restraint.

"Ghana has gained respect in the eyes of the world because of the peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims. We're all brothers and nothing must divide us," Sheikh Sharubutu said.

"We must all restrain ourselves and pray for life. Ghana is all we have. Religion is supposed to unite us and not divide us," he added.
