Vigilantism in the country has been rampant in recent years, with several cases of vandalism and abuse attributed to these groups.

Rawlings, however, clarified that community vigilantes are different from thugs who parade as vigilantes in the political circles.

He said community vigilantes are needed to protect the environment and prevent random and persistent dumping of refuse on the streets.

Speaking at the Annual Thanksgiving Service of Zoomlion and the JOSPONG Group of Companies on Friday, the ex-president said the adoption of community vigilantes is “an absolute necessity.”

“No one supports thuggery parading as vigilantes, however the need for community vigilantes to protect the environment is an absolute necessity and absolute must,” Rawlings said.

“I think before the security agency gets there, I think you people should have disciplined the person, you should have disciplined him well before you hand him over,” he added.

He explained that such vigilantes will complement the efforts of security agencies in the various communities.
