Soldier killed by unknown gunmen in Bawku

A military officer has been fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Bawku, Upper East Region

The incident, confirmed by security sources and reported by 3News, occurred on the morning of Monday, March 17, 2025, near a military buffer zone established in one of the town's conflict-prone areas.

The deceased has been identified as a Warrant Officer Class Two.

His killing has escalated tensions in Bawku, a region that has experienced recurring violence since 2021.

A joint security task force has been stationed in the area to maintain peace and stability amid ongoing unrest.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for the Interior has extended the curfew imposed on the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding communities in the Upper East Region as part of ongoing efforts to ensure peace and security in the area.

The curfew, which will be in effect from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, begins on Monday, March 17, 2025, under an Executive Instrument issued by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

In a statement signed by the minister, the government called on all residents, including chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, and the youth, to exercise restraint and adopt peaceful approaches to resolve any challenges in the region.

The renewal of the curfew underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining stability and preventing further unrest in the area.

 Also a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons remains in force within the affected communities.

The Ministry warned that anyone found in possession of such weapons will be arrested and prosecuted.
