Blakk Rasta speaks on losing out

Blakk Rasta was nominated in two categories [Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year, Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year] but lost all to colleague, Stonebwoy.

Reggae musicians and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta

He told Abrantepa on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch that for some time now, he has refused to be surprised by the scheme. According to him, the scheme has been based on popularity and everyone can attest to the fact that Stonebwoy’s Go Higherwas more popular than his .

“The surprises have become so much that I have developed a surprised shield. Stonebwoy comparably has a more popular song than ‘Serwaa Akoto’ even though ‘Go Higher’ is neither a reggae nor dancehall song. When we talk like this, people criticise that it’s because we didn’t win… I’ve grown beyond that. Even if I had won, I would have given it to Stonebwoy because his song was more popular,” he said.

Blakk Rasta however stated that he thought he would be crowned the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year because he achieved a lot the year under review.

“I was only thinking, not expecting, that Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year could come our way. In terms of achievements, and of course that is subjective as well, I was the very first citizen of this country to be made a tourism ambassador in Zimbabwe. I met one of the most popular presidents in the world, Mugabe and played for him twice. I thought it was a great achievement. I was also in Ivory Coast and all that. It didn’t come our way but I still give thanks,” he indicated.

The ‘Salaga Soldier’ in 2013 wrote a letter to the organiser of the event on why the Reggae and Dancehall should not be merged as one category. He argued that the two are different genres and should be treated as such.
