Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has criticised the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for what he describes as “following money” and allowing private businesses to use its platforms to attack accountability journalism in the country.Manasseh, a former member of the association, said in a social media post on MMonday, November 3 that he left the GJA in 2017 after the leadership at the time “fought me for fighting corruption.”“In 2017, I left the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and have since not been a member. I left because the association fought me for fighting corruption,” he said.According to him, his investigative work that year led to the cancellation of a $74 million fraudulent contract awarded to the Jospong Group. However, instead of celebrating the impact of the work, the GJA leadership turned against him.“The GJA President issued a press statement attacking my story. The press statement did not state anything wrong with the investigation, which was adjudged the overall best story in the 2018 West Africa Media Excellence Awards (WAMECA),” Manasseh recounted.

He said the GJA’s main concern at the time was that a “profitable Ghanaian business” had been affected by the exposé, insisting that such businesses should not be destroyed “in the name of investigative journalism.”Fast forward to this year, he said the GJA again offered its platform for a similar attack against The Fourth Estate, the non-profit investigative project he leads. The Fourth Estate had published a report on the KGL Group’s contract with the National Lotteries Authority (NLA).The report alleged that the contract diverted revenue meant for the NLA to the private company, leaving the authority with “only peanuts.”At the launch of the 2025 GJA Awards, the Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey, referenced The Fourth Estate’s publication, describing it as “irresponsible and sensational journalism.”He was quoted as saying:“The tendency to undermine our own across the country is worrying. The default reaction to successful local champions is often suspicion rather than celebration. Why do we cheer foreign conglomerates but question the success of local ones?”Manasseh described these remarks as “unfortunate” and said the GJA should not be complicit in promoting such narratives.

“The GJA should not follow money and allow private businesses caught in accountability journalism to spread this tired and false narrative that seeking accountability for public resources means destroying local businesses,” he said.He warned that such comments “incite the public against journalists and media houses doing accountability journalism,” adding that it “paints the journalists as enemies of the state and of Ghanaian interests.”The award-winning journalist also questioned why this year’s GJA Awards had been renamed the GJA/KGL Awards, suggesting that the association’s close relationship with corporate sponsors could compromise its integrity.“Irrespective of KGL's sponsorship package, its officials shouldn’t be given the platform to undermine the very journalism that the GJA awards were created to honour,” he said.Manasseh dismissed claims that Ghanaian journalists were anti-local business.“There are thousands of local businesses that have been built with the support of the media,” he noted. “But there are also so-called businesses that sprout overnight, connive with politicians to sign obscene contracts that are detrimental to the interests of the state.”

He likened calls to shield Ghanaian companies from accountability to condoning criminality.“To say that the media should not expose them because they are local businesses is like saying a thief or an armed robber who attacks you should be set free if he is a Ghanaian.”Manasseh argued that any company involved in public contracts must be ready to answer questions. He said Ghanaian ownership should not be used as a shield against scrutiny or accountability.He further cautioned that using GJA platforms to attack or discourage investigative journalists undermines the very values the association was created to protect. He urged the GJA to remain independent and act in the best interests of its members and good journalism.

Tensions flared in Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region on Saturday, 1 November 2025, when the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and his team were allegedly attacked by a mob reportedly led by two Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to a report by broadcast journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, the Director, identified as Colonel Buah, was on a reconnaissance mission with ten (10) soldiers to assess a potential site for a permanent anti-illegal mining taskforce base when the team discovered an excavator engaged in illegal mining near Bronikrom along the Goaso–Hwidiem highway. Several individuals were arrested, and temporary mining shelters were destroyed.

A search of the suspects’ vehicles uncovered a pistol, ammunition, mobile phones, cash totalling GH¢11,000, and other items. While arrangements were being made to transport the suspects to the Hwidiem Police Station, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, allegedly arrived at the scene with a group of men and demanded that the arrested suspects be released.

The report further indicated that the MP allegedly claimed he had been sent by Hon. Collins Dauda, MP for the area, to ensure the release of the suspects. When the NAIMOS Director refused, insisting that due process must be followed, the MP and his men reportedly turned violent, forcibly removing the handcuffs from the suspects and chasing the officers towards the police station.

Upon arrival, the situation escalated as a crowd of about six hundred (600) people, believed to have been mobilised by the MP, besieged the station, demanding the release of the suspects and seized vehicles. The mob vandalised a NAIMOS vehicle and threatened to burn down the police station.

Reinforcements led by Chief Superintendent Prince Odom-Koduah and other senior officers from Goaso and Kenyase eventually managed to restore some order. With the intervention of the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem, Alhaji Mohammed Bashiru Zarikyi, the officers were escorted to safety following the release of the impounded vehicles.

Colonel Buah condemned the MPs’ actions, describing them as a serious obstruction to law enforcement. “The fight against illegal mining requires every citizen, especially those in leadership, to stand for the law, not to shield offenders,” he stated.

2 NDC MPs fingered in alleged attack on NAIMOS director and taskforce in Hwidiem

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has clarified that it is currently conducting two active investigations involving Springfield Energy, dismissing reports that it failed to act amid arrest of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Okyere, in Dubai.

In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs on behalf of the Executive Director, EOCO described as false the claim by online outlet Novareport that the agency failed to act on a petition alleging fraud involving Springfield Energy.

“Contrary to the claims made by Novareport, EOCO has two active investigations involving Springfield Energy,” the statement said. “The first is a petition against Springfield Energy, and the second is an explosive case between BOST and Springfield Energy. It is the policy directive of the leadership of EOCO that investigations must precede arrest and not the reverse.”

EOCO further stated that the ongoing case between the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) and Springfield Energy remains a priority because of its direct impact on BOST’s finances and the broader Ghanaian economy.

Although EOCO noted that it does not usually comment on active investigations, the office expressed regret that Novareport failed to seek clarification before publishing the “false story.”

“EOCO assures the public that it is committed to investigating and prosecuting economic and organised crimes in Ghana, and we will continue to work diligently to achieve our mandate,” the statement added. “We urge the public to disregard the false claims made by Novareport and to note that EOCO is actively working on not one, but two investigations involving Springfield Energy.”

Reports had earlier circulated that Kevin Okyere was arrested in Dubai after authorities allegedly flagged his passport when he entered the emirate for a meeting with Lukoil. The action was said to be connected to an unresolved arbitration notice and a civil enforcement request related to ongoing fraud allegations.

The allegations, estimated at between $90 million and $94 million, stem from a petition filed in May 2025 by Swiss Oil Company Petraco, which accused GMP Energy, a company associated with Springfield, of diverting proceeds from crude-oil liftings and failing to honour reconciliation obligations.

The dispute reportedly involves over $30 million in petroleum sales where GMP allegedly received full payment from BOST but did not remit the funds to Petraco, as well as a $50 million loan from a $100 million facility meant for an unitisation project that was allegedly not viable.

The bursar of the Northern School of Business Senior High School (NOBISCO), Fedelia Kudaariwo, has turned herself in to the police after large quantities of foodstuffs meant for students were allegedly discovered in her residence.

According to reports by Accra-based JoyNews, nine (9) bags of maize were intercepted in the school’s minibus on Thursday, October 30, while being transported out of the school’s storage facility. Two drivers, identified as Alhassan Sulemana and Osman Asma, were apprehended by community volunteers who had been monitoring suspicious activities within the school premises.

The volunteers told JoyNews that they had received information from some students about a possible syndicate involved in stealing food items from the school’s stores at night.

Acting on this tip-off, they mounted surveillance and eventually intercepted the suspects as they attempted to move the items. During questioning, one of the drivers reportedly claimed that the bursar had instructed them to deliver the goods to her home.

The team, accompanied by local residents, later proceeded to Ms Kudaariwo’s residence, where additional food items believed to belong to the school were allegedly found. She was said to have fled the premises before the team arrived but later reported herself to the police for questioning.

Headmaster of NOBISCO, Alhassan Dokurugu, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate and disappointing. He noted that the school management had been working hard to uphold its reputation, but such incidents risk undermining those efforts. Mr Dokurugu added that the school authorities were fully cooperating with police investigations to establish the facts and ensure accountability.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of a building collapse at the Roman Ridge Engineering Centre in Accra, which left fourteen (14) construction workers injured on Tuesday.

The incident involved a three-storey structure reportedly being developed by Fabrico Builders. The building, located between a ten-storey high-rise apartment and the Ghana Institute of Engineering, came crashing down during work hours, sending debris flying across the site.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at 12:18 p.m. A rescue team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Ankrah from the GNFS National Headquarters, arrived at the scene by 12:29 p.m. to assist in rescue operations.

14 workers injured as building under construction collapses at Roman Ridge (video)

All fourteen (14) victims, identified as male construction workers, were rescued and transported to the 37 Military Hospital and the Ridge Hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that the injured workers suffered various degrees of injury, though no deaths have been recorded so far.

Officials from the GNFS said the cause of the collapse remains unclear, but a technical team has commenced investigations to determine whether the structure met required safety and engineering standards.

According to Chief Inspector Jacob Kuubal, who presented the facts, the case began after officers from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) filed a complaint. The suspects were said to be part of a Weija SCC-based syndicate that specialises in tricking people with fake gold deals.Investigations revealed that back in 2023, one of the accused, Saleh, and his group convinced Dr Muhammed Hizbullah, a Sri Lankan MP, to part with $2 million under the pretext of buying gold. But after pocketing the money, the suspects allegedly went off the radar and cut all contact with the politician.

Later, they reportedly resurfaced — bold as ever — and tried to rekindle business with Dr Hizbullah, this time offering to sell him 50 kilograms of gold. To make it look legitimate, they even went as far as signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with him.

The Accra High Court has adjourned proceedings in the cases involving the former Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Osei Assibey Antwi, and his deputy, Gifty Oware-Mensah, following their absence from court.

In Mr Antwi’s case, his lawyer appeared before the High Court and informed the judge that his client had been directed to report to police investigators in Kumasi and was currently there. The defence further noted that they had not yet been served with a charge sheet. The court consequently ordered that the charge sheet and hearing notices be served on the accused before the matter is recalled for hearing.

Meanwhile, in the separate case involving Gifty Oware-Mensah, the court was informed that she had submitted a two-day medical excuse duty. The court therefore adjourned the case, which is expected to be recalled next week.

Mr Antwi is facing fourteen (14) criminal charges involving alleged financial crimes totalling over GH¢600 million, committed between August 2021 and February 2025.

The charges include causing financial loss to the Republic, stealing, and money laundering, contrary to Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

Prosecutors allege that Mr Antwi authorised the payment of allowances to over 60,000 ghost national service personnel, resulting in a loss of GH¢500,861,744.02 to the state. He is also accused of dishonestly appropriating several million cedis from NSA accounts between August 2023 and May 2024, including unauthorised transfers of GH¢3.6 million, GH¢516,000, and GH¢2 million.

He allegedly diverted GH¢8.2 million from the Authority’s control account into his personal e-zwich card, which he later used, fully aware that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activity.

Further charges claim that he misused over GH¢100 million meant for the Kumawu Farm Project between September 2022 and May 2024, after authorising withdrawals of GH¢55 million, GH¢15 million, GH¢4 million, GH¢10 million, and GH¢22 million without applying the funds to the project’s purpose.

<h2>Charges Against Gifty Oware-Mensah</h2>

Mrs Oware-Mensah is facing five (5) counts of alleged financial misconduct committed between February 2022 and March 2024.

According to the prosecution, she dishonestly appropriated GH¢31,502,091.40 belonging to the NSA by transferring the funds to her company, Blocks of Life Consult, under the pretext of supplying goods to National Service personnel. The goods were allegedly never delivered.

She is further accused of causing an additional financial loss of GH¢6,956,157.47 by authorising interest payments on a GH¢31.5 million loan from the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) to the same company.

Her charges include stealing, wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic, using public office for profit, and money laundering. Prosecutors claim she moved funds from the NSA’s hire-purchase escrow account to her company to conceal the illicit origin of the money.

The dramatic takeover followed a vote in Madagascar’s National Assembly, where 130 lawmakers voted to impeach President Rajoelina, with only one abstention. The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that government plans to extend the dialysis treatment subsidy to private health facilities in a significant effort to ease the financial burden on patients.

He made the disclosure during the inauguration of a 13-member governing board for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, a flagship initiative designed to provide financial support for the treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases.

In his address, Mr Akandoh stated that the government would cover GH₵500 of the amount charged per dialysis session at private health facilities.

What we have realised is that there are people who also go to private facilities, and so it is a necessity; the President has directed us to give what is paid to the public facilities.</blockquote>

<blockquote>So, for example, if you go to a private facility that charges you 1,000 Ghana cedis, the government will pay 500 Ghana cedis, and you will top up, to be fair to everybody. The CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority has been directed accordingly to take up that challenge.</blockquote>

Mr Akandoh further appealed to the private sector to support government efforts, saying:

Ghana launched a free dialysis treatment programme on 1 December 2024 through the National Health Insurance Authority. The initiative provides kidney patients registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme with up to eight free dialysis sessions per month at selected facilities. According to the family, Akosua Serwah forfeited her marital rights after allegedly abandoning Daddy Lumba during his illness about fifteen (15) years ago.

The statement explained that in February 2018, Akosua Serwah wrote to the late musician to announce her intention to begin divorce proceedings, raising several allegations that Daddy Lumba denied. His legal team at the time, the statement said, responded by encouraging her to proceed, as the musician had already moved on with his life.

The lawyers also emphasised that, by custom, all rights concerning the burial and funeral arrangements of the late musician belong solely to the family. The statement clarified:

<blockquote>When a person is deceased, the body and funeral arrangements of the person belong to the family and therefore your client has no right to determine how the Fosu Royal family buries their dead.</blockquote>

On the issue of Daddy Lumba’s estate, the lawyers indicated that all his properties form part of his estate, which will be managed collectively by the family, his children, and their mothers to ensure fair distribution. They also disclosed that the legal team holds confidential instructions from the late musician guiding how he wanted his funeral, burial, and property distribution to be handled.

The statement concluded by calling for unity among all family members and parties connected to the late musician, urging cooperation to ensure a peaceful and dignified funeral for one of Ghana’s most celebrated music icons.

Security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning has raised serious concerns over the disappearance of 40,000 rounds of ammunition from the Ministry of Defence’s armoury shortly before the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government left office on 7 January 2025.

It will be recalled that prior to his untimely death in the military helicopter crash, the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, had revealed that several rounds of ammunition transferred from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to the National Security Secretariat in 2024 could not be accounted for. He had directed the Secretariat to investigate the missing ammunition.

In an interview with <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.adomonline.com/prof-aning-raises-alarm-over-40000-missing-bullets-from-defence-ministry-armoury/">Adom News</a>, Professor Aning confirmed the disturbing development and cautioned that it posed a grave risk to Ghana’s internal security and democratic stability. He described the situation as “deeply troubling and a potential threat to national peace”.

The security expert urged the government to act swiftly to curb the proliferation of arms and restore public confidence in Ghana’s security systems. He cautioned that a failure to respond decisively could expose the country to potential instability, particularly given the rising reports of chieftaincy and ethnic conflicts in parts of the country.

Professor Aning’s warning adds to growing public concern about the management of state armouries and the risk of unauthorised weapons ending up in the wrong hands ahead of future elections.

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Airport Divisional Police Command in Accra has arrested two nannies accused of drugging twin toddlers under their care at East Legon.

According to Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the suspects, Francisca Boakye, 30, a student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region, were arrested after the children’s mother lodged a complaint in September 2025.

The 40-year-old businesswoman reported that her two-year-old twin boys had been unusually drowsy and behaving strangely for several weeks. Her concerns led her to investigate further, and she later discovered that the nannies had allegedly been giving the children a sleep-inducing substance by secretly mixing it into their milk.

Superintendent Obeng explained during a press briefing that the suspects claimed the substance made the children sleep for longer hours so they could complete household chores without interruption.

Further investigations revealed that Harriet Ansah confessed to the act and alleged that she learned the practice from her colleague, Francisca Boakye. In a disturbing admission, Ansah also confessed to other forms of abuse, including striking the children’s heads with a heated object and calling them derogatory names such as “chimpanzee.”

Police confirmed that the two (2) nannies had been employed by the complainant for about eight months. A search conducted in their living quarters led to the discovery of two used sachets and four unused sachets containing unknown substances believed to have been used in the alleged offences. The exhibits have been sent for forensic examination.

Both suspects have been cautioned and charged with the relevant offences. They remain in police custody and are expected to reappear before the court on 20 October 2025.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the alleged acts, describing them as “inhumane and completely unacceptable.” Superintendent Obeng urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant in supervising domestic workers, particularly those entrusted with the care of children and other vulnerable persons.
